T.E.A.R.S. Schools

In 2000, the T.E.A.R.S. primary school was founded to provide education for 60 local children who had no birth certificates and therefore couldn’t access the basic public education system. That school has since expanded into three buildings offering quality schooling, faith-based support and leadership training, regular meals, and extracurricular activities for over 600 children from preschool through grade 12. Family mentorship and support adds to the holistic nature of the school outreach in the underserved barrio of Maria Auxiliadora.

Of special note was the building of a new high school using cargo containers, a first for the Dominican Republic. This expansion allowed the high school students to move out of the elementary school building and make room for increased enrollment.

The high school also includes the new Health and Wellness Centre, which offers accessible dental, counselling, and medical care onsite. Stories of changed lives are evident as students take leadership roles in the community and go onto post-secondary education. The story of Ydekel illustrates the importance of education and support in the life of a child.

Through the efforts of Partners In Deed, Canadian monthly donations currently cover 60% of the operating costs of the schools. Our goal is to increase monthly donations as this allows for better planning and gives certainty to the schools’ operating budget for salaries and other school expenses.

Opportunity for Support

In August 2025, the high school received accreditation from the Dominican Ministry or Education to offer polytech training which will greatly enhance employment opportunities for students and help to break the cycle of poverty.

Purpose: To continue to provide quality elementary education for 600 students from K-Grade 12. The T.E.A.R.S. school's wholistic goals include addressing the educational, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of children whose parents would not otherwise be able to afford to send them to school. By maintaining small classrooms of 20 or fewer students, teachers can better meet their students' individual needs and build supportive relationships with the students and their families.

Impact: T.E.A.R.S. students, who do not otherwise have a chance to go to school, receive an excellent core education and are able to excel in future learning pursuits upon graduation.

Our partnership over the years has enabled the teachers to receive their accreditation. As a result, the school is now accredited by the state as a private school totally run by Dominicans.
