Mission & Vision
Vision: Partnering communities across cultures for good.
Mission: To facilitate long-term partnerships between Canadian faith and other enabling communities and disadvantaged world communities for their mutual transformation.
Linking Communities
Partners In Deed links schools, community groups, churches, corporations and individuals with disadvantaged barrios in the Dominican Republic. The partnerships improve the economic, educational, health, and spiritual lives of those living in the barrio. The cross-cultural experience is enriching and the deepening relationships are mutually transforming.
Education
Partners In Deed currently supports two schools in disadvantaged barrios near La Vega, in the center of the Dominican Republic.
The T.E.A.R.S. School in the Maria Auxiliadora barrio, is an elementary school that provides quality education programs for preschool to Grade 5, along with basic school supplies. The Dominican teachers are dedicated individuals who act as role models in extracurricular parenting classes and mentoring girls at risk of abuse.
The Soto School in the Soto barrio is a one-room school that serves the local Haitian community. The school is in its second year of operation and covers kindergarten to grade 4. The three Haitian teachers from the community and are providing a learning environment and opportunity to children who would normally have no access to schooling.
Both schools aim to partner with Alberta Schools as a means to personalize and energise classroom cross-cultural learning, and to raise multi-year funds to enable them to provide quality educational programs for these children.
Local Church Programs
We believe that the local church plays an essential role in caring for the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of those living in that community. Partners In Deed is currently facilitating a Canadian church's partnership with two Dominican churches. This long-term commitment of finances, personnel and resources is enabling the Dominican church to sustain its church ministry. It provides programs in the neighbouring barrios such as water projects, children's camps, hospital visitation, sport activities for youth, food donations and leadership development.
Community Development
Since 2004, teams of Canadian volunteers have partnered with Dominican and Haitian church and community leaders in joint community projects. Projects include development of a medical clinic in the school, organizing an eye clinic, provision of biosand water filters and water purification plant, sponsorship of a girl's mentorship program, building projects and provision of sports equipment and training camps for youth. Our goal is to facilitate locally initiated programs that are led by committed, indigenous leaders.
Leadership Development
We also partner in projects for Dominican and Haitian leaders who require assistance with educational and vocational training. Projects include provision of teacher training workshops, university scholarships, 'Life Keys' course, church leadership and youth mentorship programs and development of a Leadership Training Centre in the Maria Auxiliadora barrio. |
